Biography

​Lydia Hicks is an Australian artist who began her career as a sculptural textile artist in 2003. She has a Bachelor of Visual Arts majoring in Textiles, General Drawing and Curatorial Studies (2003) followed by a Bachelor of Education (2006) from the University of Southern Queensland, Toowoomba. She then had an extensive break from her creative work for twenty years.  In that time, she pursued a successful career in Special Needs Education in England and Australia, had a family and finally settled on the Northern Beaches, Sydney. In 2021 Lydia experienced a breakdown developing a Major Depressive Illness.  With the assistance of her family, medical professionals and her mental health assistance dog (Minddog) Walter, she returned to her love of creating art. 

Lydia explores the soothing rhythms of nature and the power of bringing nature indoors using colours and compositions that create a feeling of calmness and wellbeing in the form of painting and textiles. Her focus is to break down the stigma of mental illness through her creative work to promote better mental and emotional health for the community.
